SPIRULINA
HISTORY
The story of Spirulina was revealed to public through a great
discovery of some scientists who unexpectedly found that the
way of life of one African tribe was interesting. Even though
those villagers were living in a poor area and had less chance
to consume protein from meat, they could still live healthily
on "Dihe", a common type of algae grown around the lake in
that area. This algae, which later called " Spirulina", was
usually brought from the surface of that lake and later dried
in the heat. Through its simple characteristic, Spirulina
was amazingly believed to have contained a variety of high
quality nutrients.

Mr.
Sumith Nakandala, Deputy High Commissioner of Sri Lanka in
South India, today commended the work of the Organisation
for Eelam Refugees Rehabilitation (OfERR) engaged in looking
after the welfare Sri Lankan Tamil refugees, displaced from
their homeland in the North- Eastern province of the island
nation due to ethnic unrest there, for conducting training
course in Spirulina production technology for the refugees.
The
world Health Organisation of the UN has recommended Spirulina
as safe and nutritious for children. Mr.S.C.Chandrahasan,
Treasurer of OfERR, said Spirulina was found most useful among
adolescent girls whose puberty was delayed, pregnant women
and lactating mothers. It is a perfect supplement for iron
deficiency anaemia. Children love the taste of the Spirulina
lime mix drink.

Mr.K.Ratnarajasingam,
programme Coordinator of OfERR, who was in charge of the Spirulina
technology training programme at Tahalmboor, was impressed by
the eagerness and quick absorption by the trainees who were
looking forward to spreading the knowledge to others in their
respective camps. This multiplier effect could well bid goodbye
to malnutrition in the developing countries like India and Sri
Lanka. |
