 Consensus for Hope

The Ethnic Conflict in Sri Lanka has been raging for over 30 years. Thousands have suffered in unimaginable ways due to this conflict. The case of Mr.Sivalingam and his family highlights the hardship that the common man faces in such protracted situation.

Prior to getting displaced Mr.Sivalingam was a farmer in Poovarasankulam Village of Vavuniya District. Mr.Sivalingam and his family fled into the jungles due to the hostilities. They lived in constant fear of their lives and hence had to spend Sri Lankan Rs.180,000/- (their life savings) to make the journey across to India.

Life as a Sri Lankan refugee in India has not been easy for Mr.Sivalingam and his family. Mr.Sivalingam and his wife have not been able to make ends meet. They have 6 daughters for whom they are unable to provide even basic education as they do not have the necessary finances. They live in near abject poverty. The trauma caused by the war and its resulting displacement has severely affected the continuity in the education of the girls.

Prof.Gladston and Mrs.Florina, who are OfERR resource persons, recently conducted a workshop on Conflict Transformation for a group of students at a leading educational institution namely Stella Mary’s College, Chennai. During the course of this workshop, an activity on Consensus Building was conducted. As a result of this activity, it was agreed by unanimous consensus that the contribution be given for the educational cause of the Sri Lankan Refugees.

Due to the gravity of the situation faced by Mr.Sivalingam and his family it was decided by Ms.Thenmozhi (The Coordinator, Women Empowerment Unit, OfERR) that this contribution should be given to them. This contribution will be beneficial in providing for essential items such School Uniforms, Books and Stationeries, etc, which will facilitate these girls continuing their education in India.
